The two first met during a game of Balderdash, sparking a relationship that began in 2011 and grew stronger over the years. Nearly a decade later, they marked their ten-year anniversary with an unexpected decision to marry.

Plaza shared the news on Instagram in May 2021, surprising fans with the announcement. During an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” she explained how the idea came about while they were quarantining during the pandemic.

“‘It’s our 10-year anniversary, we should do something. Get an ice cream cone or do something special,'” she recalled suggesting. That casual remark turned into a joke about marriage, and before long, they found a website to make it official. On their anniversary, the pair quietly tied the knot in their backyard.

Along with their romantic connection, they collaborated professionally, blending their creative talents in several projects. In an interview, Plaza shared how being with someone in the same field fostered mutual understanding.

“Obviously you are able to support each other and really understand kind of the journey that we’re both on,” she said. The producer also pointed out how their independent careers brought balance, adding, “Nothing is ever the same,” and noting that alternating between time apart and together strengthened their bond.

Their professional collaboration was not just a feature of their relationship but a source of mutual admiration. Plaza often celebrated Baena’s creative vision, publicly expressing her pride in his work.

In May 2021, she shared a heartfelt Instagram post featuring a photo of the couple and praised his talent. “So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble,” she wrote, referencing a project he developed with co-writer Alison Brie.

Plaza’s admiration for Baena’s talent was matched by his appreciation for her work. The pair not only supported each other in their personal lives but also developed a unique rhythm as collaborators.

When asked about working with his wife during an interview, Baena, whose Instagram account is set to private, reflected on their partnership, “At this point, I think we kind of have it worked out—we’ve done it four times.”

The Florida native often praised his wife’s versatility and their strong connection as collaborators. He shared that working with her on his first film was invaluable, thanks to their close relationship and shared understanding.

Baena revealed that his fascination with the Renaissance classic stemmed from his college studies, where he minored in Medieval Renaissance Studies. For him, it had always been a story he wanted to tell.

She spoke about their collaboration, highlighting the mix of challenges and rewards that came with working alongside her husband. Having spent twelve years as a writer as a step toward his ultimate goal, he explained, “I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director, so this was always my intention, and it felt right.”

His collaboration with Russell became a turning point, as the pair co-wrote four screenplays, including the indie favorite “I Heart Huckabees,” which featured Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, and Naomi Watts.
