News of the beloved actor John Goodman are sad.

John Goodman, the acclaimed actor known for roles in The Big Lebowski and The Flintstones, has openly shared his long battle with alcoholism and depression. For over 30 years, his addiction affected his health, career, and mental well-being. He once described himself as a “walking heart attack” and admitted that if he truly wanted a drink, “nothing” could stop him.

Goodman revealed that his alcoholism was worsened by the constant anxiety of unemployment in the acting world. The stress led to heavy drinking and even nightmares about relapsing. Despite this, he stayed committed to sobriety after quitting in 2007, crediting avoidance of triggers and support from his wife, Anna Beth Hartzog, as key to his recovery.

During his drinking years, Goodman struggled with memory loss and low confidence, which affected his ability to perform. While theater gave him energy and joy, filming movies felt draining. He eventually learned to trust himself again and rebuild his ability to memorize lines and perform with confidence.

Alongside addiction, Goodman faced serious depression, which he described as a persistent unhappiness that left him unmotivated and disconnected. With the help of his wife and a commitment to change, he overcame these struggles and now lives sober, reflecting with honesty and gratitude on how far he’s come.
