Reeves urged Andrew to ‘give much more information’ about his knowledge of Epstein scandal

On Wednesday, chancellor Rachel Reeves said Andrew “owes it to the victims” to come forward with what he knows about the Epstein scandal.

Speaking to reporters at a supermarket in south London, she said: “The former prince has got a lot of questions to answer on a whole range of issues. I think he owes it to the victims of Epstein and his associates to come forward and give much more information about what he knew around the treatment of young women and girls.”

Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing over his Epstein links but has not directly responded to recent allegations.

Arrest comes as several UK police forces conduct enquiries into allegations contained in Epstein files

Police forces across the country are now looking into allegations related to the so-called Epstein files, which contain hundreds of documents relating to the convicted peadophile.

Officers in Surrey are urging people with information to come forward about claims of human trafficking and sexual assault from the 1990s, which appeared in the files released by the US Department of Justice at the end of last year.

Surrey Police said it is looking allegations contained in an FBI report from July 2020 in which somebody alleged they were drugged at night and driven to “paedophile ring parties”. The same person also claims to have been hit by a dark blue car “driven by Prince Andrew” in which they allegedly suffered injuries to their ribs, hip and leg. Surrey Police said it has found no evidence of the allegations being reported after reviewing their systems.

Meanwhile, the Met Police said on Wednesday that “initial enquiries” have begun into allegations that protection officers turned a “blind eye” to Andrew’s visits to Epstein’s island, Little St James. An unnamed officer, speaking to LBC, said: “I’m not suggesting they definitely witnessed any criminality from Andrew… but there was concern that certain members of the royal protection team wilfully turned a blind eye to what was happening on the island.”

Earlier in the week, Essex Police said it was assessing information about private flights to and from Stansted Airport following information released as part of the latest document dump.

Buckingham Palace previously committed to supporting police amid allegations

Andrew’s arrest comes just days after King Charles admitted he was “profoundly concerned” by allegations relating to his brother’s “conduct”.

Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace confirmed it is prepared to support the police as they consider allegations against Andrew.

A Palace spokesperson said at the time:

“The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct.

“While the specific claims in question are for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect.

“As was previously stated, Their Majesties’ thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse.”
