Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism issued guidance to hotels across the emirate to extend stays for travelers unable to depart and bill the authorities directly. Dubai followed with a similar directive shortly afterward. The cause? Widespread airspace closures and large-scale flight cancellations across the Gulf, leaving more than 20,000 passengers stranded.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority stated that accommodation and meal expenses for impacted visitors would be fully covered by the state. Private sector support quickly emerged as well, with Dubai holiday rental providers offering free apartments, and more than 250 hosts stepping forward within hours.

No surge rates. No sleeping on terminal floors. No leaving travelers to sort it out alone. Instead, officials assumed responsibility until every stranded visitor could return home. A coordinated crisis response in action.
