I went on a first date with a girl who insisted we eat at a high-end restaurant, even though I suggested something

She didn’t even glance up from her phone as she effortlessly ordered the most expensive dry-aged ribeye, top-shelf cocktails, and a spread of appetizers designed for three. Throughout the night, her eyes stayed glued to her glowing screen, her bright bursts of laughter reserved entirely for group chats and phone calls. I wasn’t a date—I was merely a ghost sitting across from her, hired to sponsor her lavish evening.

The humiliation burned silently in my chest. But the moment she excused herself to the restroom, leaving behind her empty plates, our waitress quietly glided over. She looked at me with deep, knowing empathy, gently set down two separate leather check folders, and whispered, “I took the liberty of splitting your bills. You don’t deserve to be treated like this.” Relief washed over me, sharp and clean. I immediately signed my half and waited.

When my date strutted back to the table, she flipped open her folder, and her face instantly turned pale before flushing with outrage. “What is this?” she snapped, pointing furiously at her astronomical total. “Aren’t you paying?”

I casually slung my jacket over my shoulder, looked her dead in the eye, and kept my voice perfectly calm. “I came here for a date. But since your evening was entirely a solo performance, the bill is all yours.”

Stunned into silence under the burning glares of neighboring tables, she fumbled through her purse, threw down her card, and paid in humiliated silence. As she stormed out into the night, the waitress leaned in with a warm, triumphant smile. “The right person will appreciate your company,” she whispered, “never just your wallet.”

I walked out of that restaurant with an empty stomach, but my head held higher than ever. It wasn’t a night of romance, but it was the night I proved my self-respect wasn’t for sale.
