I expected a thank-you after helping clean up my neighbor’s yard. Instead, a sheriff showed up at my house the very next day.
Eight months pregnant, completely alone, and facing the nightmare of foreclosure, I stepped outside to help my elderly neighbor cut her grass. Less than twenty-four hours later, a sheriff was knocking on my door.
Watching poor Mrs. Higgins wilt under the stifling summer heat, I gently took the lawnmower from her shaking hands and finished the yard myself.
Before I walked home, she grasped my hand tenderly and said, “You are a sweet soul, sweetheart. Never forget that.”
By sunrise the following morning, Mrs. Higgins had passed away.
However, the officer explained that her security cameras had captured a strange late-night visit. Shortly before she died, she had crossed the lawn to drop something into my mailbox.
It was a heavy paper envelope with my name handwritten on the front.
Inside lay official mortgage papers alongside a bank confirmation boldly stamped:
“PAID IN FULL.”
Mrs. Higgins had used her life savings to wipe out my mortgage and preserve my baby’s home.
Her enclosed letter concluded with a single sentence:
“You offered me grace when you had almost nothing left to give, and now it is my turn to care for you.”
I sat weeping on my porch steps, overwhelmed by how one fleeting act of compassion had altered my entire destiny.
